What makes the Yoga & Spa Natural at Hotel Tropico Latino distinct is the pure bliss you get while having a massage just off the beach under the shade of a green tree canopy in the fresh sea air. No artificial soundtrack or air-conditioning needed.

“The most relaxing element is the experience of listening to the ocean waves, smelling the fresh salt air, and feeling the breeze,” said Rolando, a hotel guest, after receiving a 60-minute deep tissue massage.

As its name suggests, the Yoga & Spa Natural at Hotel Tropico Latino offers yoga classes and spa treatments in a natural setting. The design comes straight from the heart of spa owner Maria del Milagro Quesada Vargas. “I love open-flow spaces and being in nature,” Maria explained. “Here, you are not in a closed, crowded yoga studio, or a massage room without fresh air. My goal with the Yoga & Spa Natural is that people reconnect with their health through nature.”

A former Costa Rican nurse who trained in massage, energy work and esthetics, and is an instructor in Integral Balance, Maria opened the spa at Hotel Tropico Latino in 2004 with one massage table under a small rancho on the beach. As more and more surfers began discovering the incredible surfing in Santa Teresa in the early 2000s, they soon started traveling with their girlfriends, wives and families. Everyone loved receiving beachfront spa sessions.

Today, the spa encompasses two beachfront massage rooms, an all-purpose spa treatment room in the garden with its own shower, and an esthetics room, also with a private outdoor shower. The massage rooms are very private, protected from the open beach by vegetation and some trees. A partial wall on the beach side allows for air flow and yet maintains privacy.

The main yoga deck is built with tropical wood, roofed, and positioned under trees in front of the beach. A second yoga deck for private groups is located in a garden by the beach. Yoga classes at Hotel Tropico Latino are held daily, and are open to the public.

I loved my Tropical Body Glow package that started with a homemade sweet coconut scrub to exfoliate, followed by a warm papaya, carrot and honey wrap to soften my skin, a honey facial mask, and finally a 30-minute coconut oil massage. It was heaven!

Inspired by natural remedies used in Bali, only natural spa products are used here. Most are made fresh for each client, using local Costa Rican ingredients like papaya, carrots, honey, cucumber, aloe, seaweed, coffee, coconut, almonds, mint, rosemary, citrus, and volcanic clay. For lotions, oils, and aromas for aromatherapy, she works with micro-companies in Costa Rica that make these products with natural ingredients.

“My vision is to not import anything for the spa. We only use products from Costa Rica,” said Maria.

“People come to Santa Teresa, and Hotel Tropico Latino, for wellness, health, fitness in yoga, and surfing. This is a Blue Zone, an area of long life and good energy. People feel in balance here,” noted Maria. “My work is to relax people and that they leave re-energized in life, and in peace in their hearts and with the world.”
