Adventure and nature in one word: Pacuare!

The Pacuare river is one of the most important rivers in Costa Rica, with approximately 108 km long, it is originated in “Cordillera de Talamanca”. Surrounded by a rainforest that housed a variety of exotic animals such as jaguars, monkeys and a very large number of birds.

This river is divided in different sections, each one of them with their own characteristics, the first one is “The upper upper”, with 16 miles long, containing class II and III rapids. This section can be rafted and kayaked. The other section name is “The upper”, it is a more technical section that contains 10 miles of whitewater, including multiple class IV and V rapids, as well as waterfalls.

Finally, you can find “The lower” section, with class III and IV rapids, that Pacuare river is most known, it runs approximately 23 miles, the rapids and the waterfalls flown by the river, are the main attractive of this section.

The river contains a great amount of resources and natural attractives. The range of species around it is very wide, both plant and animal. Large cats such as the black panther and jaguars have been spotted in the past around the river. Also, anteaters are common as well as raccoons, river otters, iguanas, capuchin monkeys, and sloths. Howler monkeys can be found on the lower sections after the Dos Montanas canyon.

You can also find five kinds of snakes that are common in the area, such as the coral snake, the Bush master, Fer-delance, the Laura and Sopy Lota. The most popular butterfly in the area is the Blue Morpho. Other species that can be observed are the chesnut-mandibled toucan, Parakeets, Orependula, King Fischer, Tiger and Blue heron, Hawks, Osprey, King vulture, sun bird and Snowy egret, with many others.

In terms of its flora, the river is surrounded of a first generation rainforest, this has never been touched. The most common trees are Sabe tree, the national tree of Guatemala, as well as the red Indiana Desnudo (Naked Indian tree).  After Dos Montañas canyon, the heart of palm, coconut palm and banana tress become very prominent.

This river has become in an important natural resource in Costa Rica, not only because is rich in beauty and natural species, but also because  allows the practice of adventure sports and ecotourism development in the area.

Pacuare river has been named by National Geographic as one of the world’s top 10 river trips in the world, not just due to its challenging rapids, but also because of the stunning scenery offered during the tours. And also by “Outdoors Magazine” was listed as one of the top ten rivers in the world to white water raft.
